Through Him we believe | 1 Peter 1:20-21

20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

More about Jesus

Christ is the Lamb of God who paid the highest price to ransom us from sin and eternity apart from God in hell. Peter continues to tell us about our Savior, Jesus.

Known in advance

In a previous post on verse 11, we noted that Jesus knew from the time of the prophets of the OT what the future had in store for Him. Actually, since He is God, He created the future so of course He knows. God is above time; not bound by it as we are. Here Peter goes further to confirm this – that Jesus was known before the world was founded, i.e., before creation. And by whom could He be foreknown (since nothing in creation existed yet)? Well, God for one. And, the angels and the Heavenly host – since they existed prior to creation of the universe.

Now known

Jesus paid the ransom for us with His life so He was revealed at that particular, perfect, time, the “last times” (v20). He was known by the prophets (v11) and before even the foundation of the world; but He didn’t physically appear as our Savior until His advent 2,000 years ago. And, His coming was for our sake, that those who repent and believe might be forgiven and ransomed from sin…for eternity.

Through Him

So it is through Him, and Him alone, that we believe in God the Father. The Father raised Jesus from the dead after His sacrificial death. He bestowed glory to Jesus, the glory He had from the beginning which He laid aside at His advent (Philippians 2:5-11). Through this the Father proved that He is powerful, able and willing to save us. And Jesus proved that He can conquer death and defeat sin and the devil. So we put our faith and hope in Him.

  • Do you find it amazing to think about God being outside of time; the creator or time? He is the one who knows all things, the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end? (Revelation 22:13)
