Lord is with him | Genesis 39:1-6a

1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there. 2 And the Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

3 Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and put him in charge of all that he owned.

5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; so the Lord’s blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. 6 So he left Joseph in charge of everything that he owned; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.

Spotlight back to Joseph.

We now switch the spotlight back to Joseph. During the about 20 years just covered in chapter 38, Joseph had the experiences we now will see. What a welcome breath of fresh air after being “drug though the mud” of Judah’s life!

Lord is with him

If there was one statement that summarized Joseph’s life, his epithet, this would be it: the Lord was with him. We even see it repeated many times in this passage. We’ll see it demonstrated many times in his life. Just the fact that Joseph ended up as a slave of the captain of Pharaoh’s bodyguard was by God’s hand. But he’s still a slave.

Blessing passed to others

Some things, like colds, are not good to pass around. But blessings are always welcome. Joseph was blessed by the Lord and the blessing bubbled over to others. In this case, Potiphar, his boss. As the blessing flowed to his boss, his boss entrusted Joseph with more. And the cycle continues to the point where Joseph is over all of Potiphar’s household and crops.

God was with him and blessed him…but Joseph was still a slave and bereft of his family. “We often complain to God that He put us in a terrible or difficult place. Yet God’s will is that we trust Him to bless us and make us successful (as He measures success) wherever we are.” (enduringword.com)
