Sin against who? | Genesis 39:6b-10

6b Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7 And it came about after these events that his master’s wife had her eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Sleep with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put me in charge of all that he owns. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil, and sin against God?”

10 Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.

Genesis 39:6b-10 (NASB)

None greater

As we saw yesterday, God was with Joseph and blessed him. This spoiled over to his boss, Potiphar, who gave Joseph increasing responsibility. That increased to the point Joseph was second in command in the home. There was no one greater.

Serious temptation

Joseph had many things going for him – including looks. This caught the attention of many I’m sure. But in particular, Potiphar’s wife was attracted to him. She didn’t stop at attraction, she made sexual advances towards him. We don’t know what she looked like but she probably wasn’t ugly. And she kept at it “day after day”!

What to do?

What’s Joseph supposed to do? Would his master really care? Would he even know? Just one time would be okay, right? She’d stop nagging him. Wrong! All lies from the enemy who first tempted in the Garden.

Rather than give in, Joseph:

  • Refused the idea. He resisted and fled. He wouldn’t even be with her.
  • Told her plainly that he wouldn’t, he couldn’t.
  • Determined to honor his m/Master.

Sin against who?

What stands out in his list? Yes, the third one. For Joseph to do this would be a sin – not just against Potiphar – but against God! Pause. Think about that.

  • Is our sin against our neighbor only? No, it is against God. We often forget that. The result is we don’t confess to Him and the relationship remains broken.
  • Ask the Lord to show you your wicked way (Psalm 139:23-24). Humble yourself. Repent. Be restored. Be free!
