Wonderful promise | John 6:35-40

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

John 6:35-40 (ESV)

Source of life continues…

We’re continuing to look at this passage and a number of key theological truths that are core to our faith. Please review the previous blog posts on this passage starting here.

Wonderful promise

The sixth truth we’re looking at in this passage is: Jesus will resurrect all that are his – all that the Father has given him, who come to him and believe in him.  “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” This is a wonderful promise and a great verse to meditate on.

I have a good friend who’s been a Christian many years and still struggles with whether God will accept her. She listens to and believes a lie rather than this truth. So we suggested she meditate on this verse to “brainwash” herself with the truth and receive freedom from the lie.

Serpent in the wilderness

The ESV has “look on the Son” in verse 40 which reminds me of the serpent on the pole in the wilderness. We looked at this when we studied John 3:13-15. The original account is in Numbers 21:4-9 where Moses is leading Israel to the promised land. The Israelites complained to Moses about God and rejected Him so the Lord judged them by sending snakes among them whose bite was deadly. But God showed mercy. He had Moses make a bronze snake and raise it up on a pole. Anyone who looked on that snake and believed was healed and lived.

This was a type of Christ who also was raised up (on a cross) so that anyone who looks on Him and believes has eternal life. Jesus will likewise raise them up on the last day – at the resurrection!

<- Reflection ->
  • Are you hungry; hungry to have purpose in life? Are you thirsty; thirsting to have your sins truly and completely forgiven? You were created by God to worship and enjoy Him. Nothing else will satisfy. Believe in Jesus.
  • Believer, I encourage you to do like my friend and brainwash yourself with this verse if you are believing a lie.
