Jesus lifted up | John 3:13-15

13 No one has ascended into heaven, except He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes will have eternal life in Him.

John 3:13-15 (NASB)

Legitimate source

Jesus is sharing truth with Nicodemus that is radically different from what the Jews believed, yet was clearly visible in the Old Testament. He was also sharing about heaven. A witness can only share about what they have seen. Jesus is the only one who can share such truths since He is the only one who’s been in Heaven. No man has ever been in Heaven and come back to report about it. John, the writer of this gospel, as well as some OT prophets, had visions of Heaven which they received from God and wrote for us. Here’s a sample: Revelation 4:1-11, 22:1-5, 21:22-27, Ezekiel 1:5-11, Daniel 7:9-10.

Medical symbol

Have you ever noticed the symbol that is in almost anything medical? Look at the ambulance below. Look closely at the symbol. What is at the center of it? A snake on a pole. Why?

Snakes of death

In Numbers 21:4-9, we read the account of the Israelites wandering through the wilderness. God had delivered them miraculously from Egypt and was bringing them to the Promised Land. He provided for them food and water, and His presence was with them. But the Israelites complained; they rejected God’s blessing and love.

The Lord sent poisonous serpents among them. If they were bitten, they died. In mercy, God had Moses make a bronze snake and raise it on a pole such that anyone who looks at it and believes would be healed. “These poisonous snakes were not a punishment. Rather, they were a means of bringing the people to repentance. ” (www.singac.com/)

Jesus lifted up

The difference here is that when the bronze serpent was raised up and people believed, they gained life, physical life. That life, of course, still ended in death. Jesus was lifted up and died for sin. When people believe, they gain eternal life in Him. Though they die physically, they will never die spiritually.

<- Reflection ->
  • Have you looked to Jesus and believed in Him for eternal life? If not, God is calling you to be born again.
  • Believer, has sin made you spiritually sick? Look again to the healer. Confess and repent and He will be faithful to forgive and restore the relationship with Him.
  • Let’s not miss this promise of Jesus – eternal life to everyone who believes.
