Tapping into the Power | 2 Peter 1:3

3 for His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us [e]by His own glory and [f]excellence.

2 Peter 1:3 (NASB) 中文

Power for all we need

Peter here continues his thought from the previous verse about grace and peace. He tells us that God has provided us all we need in our lives (for He is our provider, Jehovah Jireh). And also everything for godliness. What excuse does that leave us with? Why don’t we seem to possess it? Do we do our part to put what He has given to use?

Blockage

How do we do that? Through our knowledge of Him. But do we really seek to know Him?  “We are willing to try almost anything except the knowledge of Him. We will trust in the schemes and plans of men instead of the knowledge of Him. We will try knowing ourselves instead of the knowledge of Him.” (enduringword.com) Ouch!

And if we do want to know Him and use what He has granted, how do we know Him? It has to start with Him revealing Himself to us. And what is His chief revelation? His Word! Yet what do we observe? How seriously do we study His word? Do we even read His word? I spoke with a sister in Christ recently who was confused about her future and asking us for wisdom. She hasn’t been seeking Him in the Bible.

Spiritual vitality

Peter talks about spiritual vitality in this letter. “Spiritual vitality is not just enthusiasm for the things of God but also strength to persevere in following Christ in the face of difficulties.” (Constable commentary) This quote reminds us of Jesus’ parable of the sower and the different kinds of soil. The best soil not only demonstrates enthusiasm but also perseveres through trials and, reproduces (Matthew 13:1-9)

And we remember Jesus said,  “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62)

RЯeflection

  • There seems to be an obvious dearth of the Word among Christians today. How seriously do you seek the Lord through His Word? Is it more than just a 3-minute quick read of a verse to “start your day”? He wants relationship with us. Relationships require communication. Our Father’s primary means of communicating with us is His Word. Let’s be like the one in Psalm 1 who delights in the law of the Lord.
  • Are we persevering through difficulties? A big part of persevering is keeping in the Word and prayer.  It also involves fellowshipping with others who seek the Lord and other spiritual disciplines.
