Active Opposition | Acts 14:1-7

14 Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed. 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.[a] 3 So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

4 But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles. 5 When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them, 6 they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country, 7 and there they continued to preach the gospel.

Acts 14:1-7 (ESV) 中文

Perga to Iconium

Paul and Barnabas continue on the first missionary journey of the church, sent out by the church at Antioch. They’ve been in Perga where Paul taught from the scriptures in the synagogue (church). First he taught history then switched to preaching Jesus as Messiah using OT proof and an altar call. The jealous Jews kicked him out so they went to Iconium.

Active Opposition

Now that they’re in Iconium, they “hit the re-play button” and went to the synagogue and preached. And again, it was with such power that many, both Jews and Greeks, came to believe. But yet again, there were jealous Jews who didn’t like what they preached. They actively worked to turn the Gentiles against Paul and Barnabas. It seems this spirit of opposition to the truth of the Gospel in Jesus Christ runs deep and wide among the Jews – both then and now.

Miraculous help

But they didn’t become scared and quickly leave. No, they took up the “fight” and kept preaching, “a long time”. And as they were, “speaking boldly for the Lord, [He] bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. (v3)” You might say, “God had their back.” Isn’t it wonderful to have the God of Heaven on your team? Or really, it’s His team that we are on. When we do His work, He doesn’t promise an easy life, He promises to be with us.

Get outta Dodge

These rebel Jews succeeded in their mission and even plotted to kill Paul and Barnabas. Thankfully they became aware of it and “got outta Dodge”. They headed down the road to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia. Guess what they do there?

RЯeflection

  • Are you doing the work God has called you to do? If you are, you will experience opposition and difficulties. Be encouraged that the Lord is with you. Jesus says He will never leave you or forsake you. And He can even help in some miraculous ways. Look for them. Believe and trust Him to.
