Kangaroo court 1 – Annas | John 18:19-24

19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”

22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

John 18:19-24 (ESV)

John now narrates the details of the “trial” before Annas. He told us in yesterday’s passage that he was able to enter the High Priest area where we can presume he watched the “trial” (possibly along with Peter).

Trial ensues

Annas, the supposed high priest, questions Jesus about His teaching and His disciples. At least he had the courtesy to ask and listen before condemning. There were no “witnesses” to bring false claims against Him. There is no record of any accusations brought at all. What is the purpose of being brought before Annas? “He examined him first in a semi-private manner, that, by cunning questions, he might extract from him some ground of accusation.” (Spurgeon)

Jesus’ response

How does our Lord reply to Annas’ questioning? First, he doesn’t expose His disciples. Regarding His teaching, He doesn’t explain or elaborate. Rather, He “calls their bluff” by telling them to ask any of the people with whom He preached publicly. He doesn’t make any apology. Then he reprimanded Annas. Who, but God, can reprimand God’s appointed High Priest, but THE High Priest!

How does this compare to Paul’s questioning by the sanhedrin in Acts 22:30-23:11? He was being falsely accused in a kangaroo court as well. The situation wasn’t exactly the same. Paul responded in ad hominem righteous anger to Annanias. When he was rebuked, he humbled himself and respected the position of High Priest, as appointed by God. Of course, he could have been being sarcastic as well.

RЯeflection

  • Jesus is the true High Priest. He intercedes for us continually. At the final judgment, it will be His sacrifice that allows the Father as Judge to pronounce us “not guilty”.
