35 Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. 37 However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.
38 For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. 39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. 40 For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
John 6:35-40 (NLT)
Source of life continues…
Yesterday we started looking at this passage and identified a number of key theological truths that are core to our faith. These are not divinely inspired identifications, just my impressions. 😀 Share your ideas in the comments.
Come to Jesus
The 2nd truth from the passage is: Only those who come to him and believe have this life and hope for the future. Jesus offers eternal life through Himself as a free gift. There is only one condition, those who desire this gift must come to Him and believe in Him.
What does this mean? Jesus has the eternal life; He IS the bread of life! To come to Him is to believe in Him. Likewise, to believe, we need to come to Him. We come to Jesus, and no one else, to no other thing. We come in faith. Have you seen this acrostic for faith? Forsaking All I Take Him.
John Piper succinctly offers, “He is Christ, Son of God, Savior, wrath-remover, sin-forgiver, righteousness-provider, soul-satisfier, strengthener. Oh, what isn’t he for us! “Christ is all, and in all,” Paul said of him (Colossians 3:11). When you believe, that is what you receive. And that means that the rest of life is growing up into that.” (desiringgod.org)
Never rejected
The 3rd truth is: The Father has predestined those to believe and Jesus will never reject them. Everyone wants to know the future, especially beyond death. The Father has selected (predestined) and given to Jesus those who come and believe. Jesus gives eternal life. He does not reject them (us) – not now, not in the future: NEVER rejects them. The possessor of eternal life does not reject those to come to Him and believe. That is good news! As an added bonus, those who come to Jesus will find rest. (Mat 11:28)
<- Reflection ->
- Have you come to Christ and believed in Him? Believe in Jesus.
- Maybe you’ve come to Him but now are seeking other ways to find life. You’ve been distracted. Return to Him.
