It’s the resurrection stupid | Acts 13:26-31

26 “Brothers—you sons of Abraham, and also you God-fearing Gentiles—this message of salvation has been sent to us! 27 The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath. 28 They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed anyway.

29 “When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross[g] and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead! 31 And over a period of many days he appeared to those who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.

Acts 13:26-31 (NLT) 中文

First Missionary Journey

Paul and Barnabas are on the first missionary journey of the church, sent out, in obedience, by the church at Antioch; ultimately sent out by the Holy Spirit. Some may wonder how Barnabas and Saul knew where to go: they were led by the Spirit (Galatians 5:18). They’re now in Perga. John (Mark) has left them. Paul is asked to teach from the scriptures just shared in the synagogue service (church). First he taught history. Now he switches to preaching Jesus as Messiah.

Message of salvation

Paul is speaking to a mixed audience in the synagogue (church) of Jews and god-fearing Gentiles who believed the Lord. He tells them that the message of salvation he just summarized is for them. He then summarizes Christ’s death and resurrection while skilfully noting it was the Jews in Jerusalem (not these in Perga) that killed Jesus. Paul points out the irony that they killed the Messiah that they read about every Sabbath! And, the good news is, “this message of salvation has been sent to us!”

It’s the resurrection stupid

In killing Jesus, they in fact, ironically, fulfilled all the prophecies about Him…that He would be killed. But what is the essence of the message Paul is preaching? It’s the resurrection. And to support his argument, he refers to, “those who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem” – meaning Jesus’ disciples. Paul is also included in this since he also saw Jesus after His resurrection (Acts 9:1-9). “This is the fifth time in Acts that the apostles claimed to be personal “witnesses” of Jesus Christ’s resurrection (cf. 2:32; 3:15; 5:32; 10:39-41; 13:30-31).” (planobiblechapel.org) It is this resurrection that the Jews (in Jerusalem, but also today) choose to disbelieve.

Paul will continue his preaching next with proof from the Law and prophets (the OT) that Jesus is Messiah followed by a call to repent and believe.
