Who killed Jesus? | Matthew 27:24-26

24 Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!” 25 And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!”[ e ]

26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.

Matthew 27:24-26 (NLT) 中文

Roman court concludes

Jesus has been judged by the Jewish leaders and now Pilate. Pilate was seeking to get Jesus released but it seems a riot is about to start as a result. His options are reduced to one – give Jesus over to be crucified.

Why crucified?

Though Pilate wanted to see Jesus freed, the Jews wanted Pilate to crucify Jesus. Why crucify Him? Why not just execute Him in some other way.  “Because for the Jews, a person hanging on a tree was a demonstration that he was under God’s curse (Deut. 21:23).” (planobiblechapel.org) The Jewish religious leaders had poisoned the mind of the crowd into thinking Jesus was a blasphemer. And everyone knows the penalty for blasphemy.

Who killed Jesus?

A better question might be, “Who is responsible for Jesus’ death? Who comes to mind?

  • Pilate and the Romans. True. They performed the crucifixion, since the Jews had no rights to execute people. The Romans physically killed Him. They committed the actual act.
  • The Jewish leaders. It was they who wanted Him dead. They tried Him in their  Kangaroo Court then convinced the crowds to demand Jesus be crucified and Barabbas released. Surely they are responsible.
  • The crowd. They are the ones who demanded His crucifixion – at the behest of the Jewish leaders, deceived as they were. It was their threat of riot that forced Pilate to make the decision to let Jesus be crucified.
  • You and me. Thought I’d throw you a curveball. Stop and think a second. If it wasn’t for us, Jesus wouldn’t have had to come and die. “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:6)
  • The Father. Now you’ve got to do some real soul searching. Is God the Father really responsible for Jesus’ death? Take a look at these verses: Matthew 26:39, Acts 2:23, Isaiah 53:4, 10, Romans 8:32. And consider this article.

RЯeflection

  • Have you thought through this before? You and I are responsible for Jesus’ death for we are all sinners. Ultimately, it was God the Father’s plan, out of love for us, an indescribable, gracious love that exceeds all explanation!
  • Have you forgiven the one who has sinned against you – knowing you have been forgiven? Have you thanked the Father for His indescribable gift?
