Not yet. Be ready | Matthew 24:3-8

3 And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the [ b ]end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one [ c ]misleads you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the [ d ]Christ,’ and they will [ e ]mislead many people. 6 And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.

Matthew 24:3-8 (NASB) 中文

Mt. of Olives

So Jesus leaves the Temple and Jerusalem and walks with His disciples a short distance to the Mt. of Olives. This whole next section of teaching on the future / end times is to His disciples, not the crowd or the religious leaders.

You may ask, “What prompted them to ask about the end times?” Well, He just shared in the previous verses about the destruction of the Temple. And in the previous chapter, He told them in v39, “For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!’” So they must be wanting details. Their idea of His second coming is likely quite different than Jesus’.

Don’t be misled

His first response is a command: “Do not be misled.” There will be many signs but keep faithfully waiting because they are just the beginning leading to His return – like birth pains. The signs include:

  • False Christs, of which many have come and continue to.
  • Wars, which seem to always exist due to sin in this world.
  • Famines, which also continue to exist – but not of a world-wide nature of late.
  • Earthquakes are commonplace for many countries including Japan, Taiwan, and East Asia in general.

Not yet. Be ready.

Jesus teaches them to stay alert. Recognize the signs. Stay alert and be ready. These are not the end. He compares them to birth pains. As any mother will testify, birth pains start then gradually increase in intensity until they become unbearable. We’re not there yet.

And how do we interpret these signs He will give us? There is no common agreement. “Though some prophetic interpretations are different, we are sure of this: He is coming again, and we must be ready.” (enduringword.com)

RЯeflection

  • How can we avoid being misled? Are the current world events the end times or a clear signal they are within a year? Read and study His Word and apply it. Spend time with Him in prayer and fellowship, in worship, in fellowship with others, etc.
  • If we know the signs of the times and He will return and come to judge, should we tell others? Warn others?
