Resurrection is real | Matthew 22:23-33

23 On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to [ p ] Jesus and questioned Him, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother as next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up [ q ] children for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us; and the first married and died, and having no [ r ] children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 It was the same also with the second brother, and the third, down to the seventh. 27 Last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her in marriage.”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, since you do not [ s ] understand the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

Sadducees attempt

In the last passage, the Pharisee religious leaders try to trip up Jesus and invalidate His ministry. They failed miserably. Maybe the Sadusees didn’t know the details for they now come and try to do the same. Their slant is on the resurrection, since they don’t believe in it. That’s why they are sad-u-see. 😀

Resurrection riddle

The Sadducees come up with this tricky test. It’s a resurrection riddle. I’m sure they used this in their defense when arguing about the resurrection with the Pharisees (who believe in the resurrection). They first quote the law of Moses (Deuteronomy 25:5) – which God gave to protect the heritage of every tribe and family in Israel. Then they make up a fictitious example to challenge the doctrine of the resurrection.

Scripture and Power of God

Jesus again used their question as a teaching opportunity. He first gets their attention by confronting them about their lack of Scripture knowledge and the power of God. He wasn’t making fun of them but lovingly telling them their error…with the hope they would repent and believe. That is always His goal – the saving of souls.

Resurrection is real

He provides a few teachings about the resurrection: 1)The resurrection is real. 2) There is no marriage in Heaven. 3) Neither do angels marry. Using the example of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, He shows from scripture (Exodus 3:6) that “He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” So, proof of the resurrection existed way back in Moses’ time, the time of the giving of the law.

  • Have you thought about what happens after death? Surely our bodies decay; even if well mummified. But our spirit lives on. Some, based on repentance and faith in Christ, will spend eternity in Heaven; the rest will live eternally in Hell, separated from our Holy God. In addition to this, we know we will have a body, a new one, due to the resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:35-54, 1 Thess 4:16-18) Do you believe?
  • Sometimes we get distraught about our current situation. Maybe we are suffering. Could be we have ongoing pain. Be comforted. Life on this earth is temporary – as are these afflictions. God comforts us here and now (2 Corinthians 1:3-6), but also forever in eternity.
