Truly God’s Son! | Matthew 14:28-32

28 Peter responded and said to Him, “Lord, if [r]it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out with His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly God’s Son!”

Matthew 14:28-32 (NASB)

Like Master, like disciple

Upon seeing Jesus walking on the water that night, Peter, the boldest and most brazen one of the bunch, gets this crazy idea. “If Jesus can do it, so can I!” He asks Jesus, no, he commands Jesus to call him out of the boat to him on the water. I don’t know which requires more faith – walking on water or commanding the Son of God to do something!

Jesus condescends to Peter’s request and calls him to come. So Peter, now either in a crazy stupor or to “save face” or both, gets out of the boat, wind and waves still pounding, and comes toward Jesus. And he walked on water, just like Jesus. Like Master, like disciple.

Faith waivers

But he sees the wind and waves and fears. He takes his eyes off Jesus and looks at the trouble around him. The result? His faith wavers. He begins to sink into the waves. His bold, brazen courage evaporates to be replaced by the terror of drowning. And this while standing in front of Jesus who is still stationed above the water. At least he has the thought to cry out to Jesus to save him. Of course He does. But then the words, “you of little faith”. But didn’t he just have faith to walk on water and believe it was Jesus?

Truly God’s Son!

As soon as Peter and Jesus get into the boat, the wind and waves cease. Immediately! What’s the reaction of the disciples? Nothing to do but worship. Together they exclaim, “You are truly God’s Son!”

RЯeflection

  • So many lessons here. Leave a comment about what you learned. For one, we need to ask, “Where is our focus? Is it on Jesus?” We may not be sinking in the middle of a lake like Peter but we may be missing His will. Pause now and ask the Spirit to search your soul and re-adjust your gaze.
  • Are we keeping our eyes fixed on the Lord? It is so easy to be distracted by the cares of the world (like seeds on bad soil).
