What’s it worth? | Matthew 13:44-46

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Matthew 13:44-46 (ESV)

Two more parables

Jesus has three more parables for His disciples (not the crowds as a whole). These two today are about finding something of great value (whether by accident or intention) then giving your all to gain it. In the first, the man seems to just happen upon this treasure. The second has him searching. In both, he sells all he has to get the most valuable treasure.

The point

I like this summary from Barnes’ commentary: “The point of the parable lies in his earnestness, his anxiety, his care, and his obtaining it. The gospel is valuable as such a treasure, Ps 19:10, Prov 3:13-15. From most men it is hid. When a man sees it, and hears it, it is his duty to sacrifice all in the way to his obtaining it; and to seek it with the earnestness with which other men seek for gold. The truth often lies buried; it is like rich veins of ore in the sacred Scriptures; it must be searched out with diligence; and it will repay him for all his sacrifices, Lk 14:33, Php 3:8.” Read it again…along with the verses.

  • For those who don’t currently trust Christ as savior, the message is clear – when you find this treasure in the truth of the Word of God, give up all attempts at salvation by your own means and put your full trust in Christ alone, through faith alone, by grace alone. Put all your eggs in that basket, so to speak.
  • For those who do follow Christ, we ask ourselves are we still “all in”? Do we still trust Christ alone? Have we started to rely on our own abilities and good works? Are we stealing the glory from our Lord or do we fully turn it all over to Him? Are we storing up treasure in Heaven? For where our treasure is, that is where our heart is. (Matthew 6:19-21)
