Send workers, send me! | Matthew 9:36-38

36 Seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

Matthew 9:36-38 (NASB)

Jesus’ compassion

Last post we talked about Jesus healing everyone, how He demonstrated compassion for the people who knew they were sick.  And he still does it today. Here we see this idea repeated – but it extends beyond just the physically sick to the crowds in general – everyone – for everyone is sick, spiritually sick. All have the disease of sin that is drawing them not just towards physical death but eternal separation from God.

In John Jesus describes Himself as the Great Shepherd who not only cares for the sheep but lays down His life for them (John 10:11). Jesus has compassion, but He also does something about it. Now that He’s not physically here, can He still demonstrate compassion?

Pray for workers

By all means! The body of Christ is the way Jesus extends His compassion today. Followers of Christ are called His body for a reason. We are actually His representatives. He lives through us and, by the Spirit, is in us. As we daily take up our cross (Luke 9:23) and follow Him, doing as He did, as we decision-by-decision submit ourselves to do His will and die to our own, offering ourselves as living sacrifices, we enable Him to work through us.

Send me

It’s true we need to pray to the Father to send forth workers. Many pray this prayer and I believe God hears and answers. They pray, “Send Bob. He has such a heart of compassion. Send Sue since she has a gift of evangelism. But of those who pray, how many consider that they are, we are, the workers God needs to send?

And this harvest doesn’t have to be foreign missions as we traditionally think. Jesus is here talking about the Jewish people in Israel. It’s any mission, any work, any compassion – right around you or around the world.

RЯeflection

  • Are you praying this prayer regularly? More importantly, are you considering that you are that worker? You don’t need to wait. You don’t need any special teaching or gifting. As you are now, you can go. Plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out you into His harvest.
