Amazing Jesus! | Matthew 8:10-13

10 Now when Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Matthew 8:10-13 (NASB)

Faith of the centurion

Last post we saw the faith of the centurion who humbly sought Jesus to help heal his servant. It showed his faith in and respect for Jesus, as well as his tender heart. Today we see Jesus’ reaction.

Amazing Jesus

Yes, Jesus is amazing…and more! Yet what stands out to me in this event is that Jesus is amazed at the faith of the centurion. But what makes it doubly amazing is Jesus has not seen this kind of faith among the children of God! Of all the people in the word, the children of God, the Jews, the chosen people whom God has mercifully forgiven and rescued so many times, should be the faithful ones.

Heavenly party

Jesus also gives us a glimpse into eternity where the followers of Christ will be with Him and able to see the patriarchs of the faith – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the lot. Who will attend this party? Amazingly, the “despised Gentiles” – even cursed Roman soldiers, will be there. In fact, people from all walks of life, from every geography. “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,” (Rev 7:9)

At the same time, there is a place of, “outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (v12) where those who don’t have faith will go. Like Heaven, it also is a real place. If we say we have faith to trust Christ for dying for our sins, then we should be able to demonstrate this faith in our daily lives.

Final result

The final result of the centurion’s faith is: the servant is healed, “at that very moment.” Jesus didn’t have to go to the servant. He didn’t need to touch him or speak directly to him. Jesus healed exactly as the centurion had described authority in the application of faith. He commanded the healing and it occurred. That’s amazing!

RЯeflection

  • The question could easily be asked again today. Not just to the Jews, but to Christians: Do we have this kind of faith?
  • Salvation is based on faith. When talking about false prophets, Jesus shared before that a tree is known by its fruit (Matthew 7:17-20). And in Matthew 3:7-10 he warns that “Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
