God with us | Matthew 1:22-25

22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”

24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Prophecy of virgin birth

About 700 years before the birth of Messiah, Isaiah wrote the prophecy under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Matthew quotes it (from the Greek translation of the OT, the Septuigent) to show us that God has fulfilled His promise.

But is this just a “Christian interpretation” of this passage? No. “Rather, before there was a Christian doctrine of a virgin birth resulting in “God with us,” there was a Jewish doctrine of a virgin birth resulting in “God with us.”” (thegospelcoalition.org) Have a look at that article for more details on this topic.

God with us

So what does this mean, God with us? Jesus is, “God with us, in his incarnation; God with us, by the influences of his Holy Spirit, in the holy sacrament, in the preaching of his word, in private prayer. And God with us, through every action of our life, that we begin, continue, and end in his name. He is God with us, to comfort, enlighten, protect, and defend us, in every time of temptation and trial, in the hour of death, in the day of judgment; and God with us and in us, and we with and in him, to all eternity.”” (Clarke commentary)

Obedient Joseph

We already identified Joseph had good character qualities. Now we add obedience to the list. He 1) took Mary as his wife – willing to suffer shame; 2) kept her a virgin until Jesus was born – he denied himself the pleasure of having a wife; 3) he named Him, Jesus – and gave up any name he had planned for his son.

  • Again we are amazed with God’s Word, His Bible. He prophesied so many details of Christ’s birth hundred of years before the coming of Christ. Sure, non-believers will try to dispute one or two, but can all 300 or so be fabricated?
  • God is with us. God is with you! You don’t need to feel it. It’s true regardless of feelings. Believe and trust.
  • A sure sign of faith is obedience to what we believe. How do our actions show (or deny) our faith?
