Rebellious rogue | Genesis 26:34-35

34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Genesis 26:34-35 (NASB)

A few years later…

Esau and Jabob have been out of the limelight for a while. We can presume that at least Jacob moved with the family and stuck around. Esau was a wild man, hunter of game (Gen 25:27) so likely went off on his own. Certainly, to meet Hittite women and marry them, he had to leave home. So this is now many years after the well stories when news comes home that Esau has done this.

Why offensive?

So why was this so offensive? For one, he is not following the “pattern established by Abraham, that his descendants should not marry the women of Canaan (Genesis 24:3-4).” (enduringword.com) Though Abraham and Isaac both lived among the other nations and peoples, there seems to be a growing assumption that Abraham and his descents of promise are unique and should not be unequally yoked with them. Nevermind that Isaac just made an oath with Abimelech (see yesterday).

As well, this information about Esau seems to reveal his rebellious and sinful character first seen in the mutton story and confirmed in Hebrews 12:16.

Context

Dr. Thomas L. Constable provides the context that shows the importance of this inclusion about Esau’s marriage: “Two reports of Esau’s marriages (Gen 26:34-35 and 28:6-9) frame the major account (Gen 27:1—28:5), providing a prologue and epilogue. Esau’s marriages are significant, because Rebekah used them productively, as the incentive to persuade Isaac to send Jacob away to get a wife (Gen 27:4b), and because they were the reason Isaac did so (Gen 28:1).” (planobiblechapel.org)
