Faith is contagious | Genesis 24:10-14

Note: Audio doesn’t exactly match today.

10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.

13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”

Immediate obedience

So Abraham’s servant has made an oath to find a wife for Isaac from among Abraham’s people. What’s his next step? He gets up and goes – immediate obedience. He had likely seen this demonstrated first-hand by his master Abraham (like Genesis 21:14, the circumcision, and Genesis 22:3, the sacrifice of Isaac) since he was the oldest and most trusted servant as we saw yesterday (v2).

Faith is contagious

And like Abraham (and probably from Abraham), he had learned to trust God as Abraham did. Consider the challenge. He had to find his way back to Abraham’s former residence (without GPS), get there and back safely, find his relatives, and hope they have a single daughter. Then the family and daughter need to be convinced of the idea!

Though not stated, he probably trusted the whole ordeal to the Lord – including finding the right family and wife. He wisely set up a test to know the Lord’s will. The fact he set the test, by itself, demonstrated faith. Let’s be wise, however. Discerning God’s will by circumstances is a risky method. But in this case, “Eliezer established what he would look for before anything happened. He wasn’t making up the standard as the process unfolded.” (enduringword.com

The best GPS

So how did the servant find the place anyway? There was no GPS, no Google maps, or AAA. It’s possible, since he was the oldest servant, that he actually came from Ur with Abraham many years before. If we run into him in Heaven, I’m sure he’ll say he indeed did have GPS – God Provision System. 😁

RЯeflection

  • Do we have a contagious faith? Are we trusting in the Lord in all things, big and small? Are others able to see and be encouraged in their own faith? Maybe we could be more outspoken, tempered with humility, about how we are trusting God. Or telling others of faith experiences – how God proved Himself faithful.
