God shut the door | Genesis 7:11-16

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13 On the very same day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, all sorts of birds. 15 So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. 16 Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed it behind him.

Genesis 7:11-16 (NASB)

Raining elephants and hippos

You’ve heard the expression when there is a heavy rain, “it’s raining cats and dogs”? This was 10 times as heavy; not just a downpour or a “gully washer”. Water not only came from above, it also came from underground. Maybe there was a water layer below the surface that burst through the earth’s crust. This lasted 40 days and nights! Can you imagine? It may have been depressing. But shirly there was lots to do to keep their mind occupied.

God shut the door

Noah was 600 years old when the flood came. He and his wife and his three sons and wives entered the ark. After Noah and his family (and all the animals and birds) were on the ark, God shut the door.

God did this not just because they couldn’t. He did it also to seal fates. “The ark was salvation for Noah, but condemnation for the world.” (enduringword.com) As the waters rose, all the doubters and critics suddenly became believers. But their fate was already sealed. The day of judgment had come.

By kind

We first saw this term in Genesis 1:12-25 when the Lord created life, each according to its kind. Here it helps us deduce that Noah didn’t bring one of every species (assuming diversification had begun through micro evolution) but rather, for example, just one pair of dogs from which they would again diversify. This would greatly reduce the number of animals on the ark.

  • The flood portends a future cataclysmic event, the end of the world, but also the end of each person’s life. Then judgment. Are you ready
  • “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” Hebrews 9:27-28 ESV
