Leave and cleave => one | Genesis 2:24-25

24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.

Genesis 2:24-25 (NASB)

God commanded mankind to be fruitful and multiply. Now He tells them how. It’s not just a sexual means, though that is certainly the literal way, but it involves a deep oneness of two different persons, a leaving and cleaving and becoming truly one. “The bond of marriage (spouse with spouse) even takes precedence over the bond of procreation (parent with child).” (panobiblechapel.org)

Leave and cleave => one

Marriage lessons continue with this passage. For this reason – what reason? For the reason that woman was created from man, for man. But why does the man leave his parents rather than the woman leave the parents? The man is the God-designated leader in the family. It’s difficult to lead the family when you’re still under the authority of your parents. Plus, I believe the wife also leaves, but it was not the most crucial.

To leave is to separate from the authority of the parents and come directly under God’s authority. Men are told to love their wives as Christ loves the church (Eph 5:25), not as their dads love their moms. The connection is to Christ. There is an emotional aspect as the husband moves out from under his parent’s control and covering and both comes directly under Christs and, establishes a new home where he is the spiritual head. With the wife, they together are the covering for the kids.

The key is to be joined to (united with) his wife; to become one flesh. This is obviously physical but also in every other way. Marriage of man and woman, two similar but unique persons, reflects the unity in the godhead.

In our Western cultures today (but increasingly all cultures) it is necessary to re-emphasize God’s design is one woman, one man, united in marriage. The man is a man, not a woman who lies to herself to say she’s a man, and vice versa. There are no others in the relationship – not even relationships in the mind (Matt 5:28).

Naked w/o sin

There may be many meanings and implications of this statement. I believe it was primarily to show the purity and innocence of their existence. “To be naked… and not ashamed means you have no sin, nothing to be rightly ashamed of, and nothing to hide.” (enduringword.com)  This was before sin, which happens next.

  • Marrieds, have we properly “left” mom and dad or is there still an unhealthy connection and dependence? It will undermine your marriage.
  • Are you (we) truly cleaving to one another, accepting one another fully as God intended?
