In His Image – Day 6 (cont) | Genesis 1:26-27

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:26-27 (ESV)

Trinity again

As God finishes creation, He saves the best for last. His pinnacle of creation is man. One truth lying just under the surface is that the work of God is as a trinity working together. Did you notice it? In verse 24 God says, “let Us…in Our image…Our likeness”. (The NASB changes it to proper nouns with upper case). Then in v27, it’s back to singular, “in His own image, in the image of God He created him.

Remember we first got a glimpse of the trinity in the very first verses, Gen 1:1. God created and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. God created with the Word (v3)…which is Jesus (John 1:1). If we look at the whole account again, it’s related to us by Moses where he talks about God and uses the 3rd person. But the one time Moses quotes God speaking about Himself, He uses the plural. Isn’t that quite interesting?

In His image

What does it mean to be created in God’s image? Most think that since Jesus was a man, God is a man since Jesus is God. Surely Jesus is God (and man). After His resurrection from the dead, He appeared and the disciples recognized Him. He even had nail prints in His body (John 20:26-29). Yet He appeared suddenly and disappeared in the same way. So His body is not as ours…but what our glorified bodies will be like (1 Corinthians 15:52, 1 John 3:2). Further, John 4:24 tells us God is Spirit. He is not flesh, as we are.

So what does it mean? If asked, how would you describe God? He’s kind, gracious, loving, jealous, He gets angry; He’s even humorous. He certainly is creative! Do you notice any of these traits in mankind? The answer obviously is yes. We are like God in His personality traits.

But mostly, we are like Him in having a spirit. The account here is quite clear as we’ll see in Genesis 2:7 where God gives Adam of His spirit (1 John 4:13). The living organisms created before man are different from man. Here is that idea of separation again. Animals, birds, fish, may have souls and the ability to think and even make decisions, but they don’t have spirits. Only man has a spirit. That spirit is like God’s Spirit. In fact, when we become born again, the very Spirit of God comes to abide in us (James 4:5). With that spirit comes a free will.
