3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
GGenesis 1:3-5 (NASB)
Where did it come from?
God starts creation with the heavens and the earth. From this point onward, He speaks, and things come into existence…out of nothing! It doesn’t say He took from the heavens or earth and made light, made plants, made animals, made man. No, He simply spoke them into existence.
Who can create? Who created the car? Surely God didn’t – at least I don’t see it in the Creation account. Henry Ford didn’t even create it – he only thought of a way to mass produce them. Can man even create? “Men cannot create in the sense the term is used in Genesis 1:1. We can only fashion or form things out of existing material.” (enduringword.com)
Speak into existence
So man does not create from nothing; God alone does. How does He do it? Principally, as we see here, He speaks things into existence. Things that didn’t previously exist, He instantly speaks into existence. But what else would you expect from God? Or, why didn’t he just think things into existence? Surely, He could have done that!
Power of The Word
God chose to speak things into existence. Why? Here is where we tie into our last study, the study of the book of John. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being…14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-3, 14)
“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their lights.” showing the continuity of thought in the Scripture.
Psalm 33:6
Jesus is the Word of God who became flesh and lived on earth. God created everything – the universe, stars, planets, black holes, angels, plants, animals, man, even time! God spoke The Word (Jesus) by Whom all things were created. “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:16-17) Praise our Lord!
