No greater love | John 21:18-19

18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

John 21:18-19 (ESV)

No greater love

Jesus just asked Peter 3 times if he loved Him. Now He tells Peter that he will indeed die for Him. What is the greatest demonstration of love? “Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) In Matt. 26:35, Peter said He’d die for Jesus but then denied he even knew Jesus.

Jesus even predicts the means by which Peter will die – on a cross. This may have scared Peter. “Yet it also gave Peter assurance. In the crucial moment a few weeks before, Peter denied Jesus three times to save himself from the cross. Jesus assured Peter – most assuredly – he would face the challenge of the cross once again and he would embrace it.” (enduringword.com)

Die daily

How do we die for Jesus today? Same way they did then. Some are killed for their faith or otherwise persecuted. (Check out presecuted.com for ways to pray for brothers and sisters who are persecuted.) For most of those reading this blog, we don’t have a present physical threat against us. Rather, Jesus calls all of His followers to die to themselves daily (Luke 9:23).

But How? Deny what your flesh wants which is excessive or outright opposed to God; the Word and the Spirit will inform you. Die to a dream you have and entrust the outcome, your future, to Him – to use you as He wills. Give up phone or TV time for time with the Lord, enjoying His presence, worshiping.

Follow me

As he waits for his homegoing to be with the Lord, Jesus’ message to Peter is: follow me. In Matthew 4:19 Jesus first called the disciples to follow Him….and He’d make them fishers of men. He calls all to follow Him. When we follow Him, we are tested (c.f., Romans 5:3–5; James 1:2–4) and experience trials (c.f., 2 Cor 1:5, John 16:33).

  • Are you dying to yourself and your own desires and plans daily? Actually, it’s a moment-by-moment decision. As the thought or temptation comes, we need to stop it at the door to our minds, check if it’s a godly thought or idea, then reject it if not.
