The best teacher award | John 14:25-26

25 “I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

John 14:25-26 (AMP)

Preparation time

Jesus reminds them yet again that He’s getting ready to leave. If they don’t get the message by now, they’re as clueless as I often am about spiritual things! In John 13:31-35 He focused on prepping them

Wonderful Counselor

One of the things I’m appreciating about John as we’re studying is the emphasis on the Holy Spirit. I selected the AMP version for this passage since it lists a number of names for the blessed Helper, the Holy Spirit. As God has many names that describe His attributes, and Jesus has many names describing His person, so the Holy Spirit also has many names – mostly focused on the role He plays in our lives. Can I encourage you to stop what you’re doing, put life on pause, and click on these different links? As you do, consider what you’re reading. I will guarantee that your response will be to worship and give thanks!

Best teacher – ever!

Jesus asks the Father (John 14:16) and the Father sends the Holy Spirit. He is sent in Jesus’ name, as His representative. One of the roles the Spirit has (see list above) is teacher. And He is the best teacher – ever! What can He teach? All things. Everything and anything! Though this is likely primarily for Jesus’ disciples (some who wrote books of the NT), the Spirit can teach us too.

And it is not just giving information, He specializes in application. Temptation comes. What do you do? Cry out for help. The Spirit (living in you) will help. He’ll bring 1 Cor 10:13 to your mind and prompt you to trust and look for the way of escape. Have a big decision to make? The Spirit of Truth will guide you into all truth and wisdom. Are you afflicted and troubled? The Sprint can remind you that God is a God of all comfort (2 Cor 1:3-4) and that the Spirit Himself is The Comforter.

I find that He usually does His work through the Word. So, the more of it we can memorize and meditate on, the more we enable the Spirit to do His work in us.

Bible memorization

Verse 26 is one of my NASB Navigators Bible memorization verses from 35+ years ago. I’d drive about 45 minutes to work on a long highway and, one at a time, I’d memorize a deck of about 30 verses – most of which I still remember! I didn’t know then how foundational and powerful Bible memorization (and meditation) are in life. Pick up a pack today! Or use an app like Remember me

  • As I noted above, I encourage you to click on the links to the different names of God, Jesus and the Spirit. Take time to worship.
  • If you haven’t memorized scripture (or it’s been a while), get (back) into it. You can do it. If you’re old, it’ll help renew your mind physically
