What’s the way? | John 14:4-6

4 “And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:4-6 (NASB)

After endeavoring to settle His disciples’ nerves and give them hope that they will join Him in the place where He is going, Jesus now tells the way there. Verse 6 is another of Jesus’ seven “I am” statements in John. Here’s a list of them all. Verse 6 is one of the boldest of Jesus’ claims.

The Way

He has told them many times He is leaving and the disciples ask where he is going (John 13:36). They still don’t get it. We gain great insight into Jesus’ relationship with the disciples from these questions: “Often they show their ignorance, but never do they seem timid in his presence, or ashamed to let him see how shallow and hard of understanding they are.” (Spurgeon; quoted in enduringword.com)

When Jesus says, “you know the way”, He is not saying they know a fact as in they know the directions. Rather, He is telling them they know Him and He is the way. We note that He was on His way to the cross. He calls His disciples to follow Him, even to take up our cross and follow Him. (Matthew 16:24) The call to die to ourselves (1 Corinthians 15:31) and live for Him.

The Truth

Yesterday, we looked at the antidote for anxiety – faith. Faith is based on the truth. What is the truth? Jesus. Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14); the Word of God is the truth. Whenever I get frustrated with the lies in the news, I turn to the Word to get a dose of truth – like breathing pure 02 after breathing polluted air!

The Life

“I am the resurrection and the life.” is what Jesus told Mary at the resurrection of Lazarus (John 11:25).  “He was claiming to be the source of both. There is no resurrection apart from Christ, and there is no eternal life apart from Christ. Beyond that, Jesus was also making a statement concerning His divine nature. He does more than give life; He is life, and therefore death has no ultimate power over Him. Jesus confers this spiritual life on those who believe in Him, so that they share His triumph over death (1 John 5:11-12). Believers in Jesus Christ will experience resurrection because, having the life Jesus gives, it is impossible for death to defeat them (1 Corinthians 15:53-57).” (gotquestions.org)

The only way

He is the way and there is no other way to the Father in Heaven. This is a bold claim. He is not one of many ways. He is the only way. If there is another way, Jesus is a liar (not the Truth) and, is not the way. The other option is that He is a lunatic and hence, not worthy to be believed or trusted.
