Created for worship | John 12:28-30

28 [Rather, I will say,] ‘Father, glorify (honor, extol) Your name!’” Then a voice came from heaven saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd of people who stood nearby and heard the voice said that it had thundered; others said, “An angel has spoken to Him!” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

John 12:28-30 (AMP)

Yesterday we looked at how Jesus’ ultimate goal in life was to see the Father glorified. He perfectly patterned this for us. In fact, in Matthew 5:16, Jesus calls us to the same: “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven”. This is our life’s purpose. We were created to worship God.

Father’s response

How does The Father respond to Jesus? “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” (verse 28) “The word again here implies no mere repetition, but an intensification, of the glorification yet once more: and this time fully and finally.” (Alford quoted in enduringword.com) How has He already glorified Himself in Jesus? Through His incarnation, God became man, the Word became flesh, Emmanuel. How can He top that? “He would glorify Himself again, through Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension.” (planobiblechapel.org)

The people’s response

Some thought it was thunder; others thought an Angel spoke. Did they recognize what was said? It seems at least John (and probably the disciples) understood. Did Jesus need to hear these words? As a son, I think it encouraged Him – especially for what He was about to suffer. But Jesus says the heavenly response was for the people’s benefit – to confirm Jesus’ relationship with the Father God.

<- Reflection ->
  • Do we live our lives such that our purpose is to glorify God? It’s not just about singing and “feeling good”. It’s also about following and serving – sacrificing our life daily that His will is done.
