Two resurrections | John 5:25-29

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, a time is coming and even now has arrived, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

John 5:25-29 (NASB)

Two resurrections

The gospel message we looked at yesterday involves resurrection: “pass out of death to life” (John 5:24). Now Jesus goes into more detail about resurrection. Actually, it’s two resurrections.

  1. The first is a spiritual resurrection that happens when  a person hears Jesus. They live. They are raised from being spiritually dead to spiritually alive. Jesus was talking to the spiritually dead. Some, by hearing Him, would be raised to life, spiritual life, eternal life. Jesus says the time for that has already arrived, and it continues through to today.
  2. The second is a physical one, when the physical bodies of all people will be raised from the dead – everyone. And this one has two end states: life or judgment. Some may say this happened when Jesus Himself was resurrected and many came back from the dead (Matthew 27:52-53). It may, but more likely refers to a future time.
    • Life – for those who “hear” (those are already spiritually resurrected) their bodies will rise to eternal life – in the presence of God.
    • Judgment – for those who don’t hear and obey, who reject God’s free gift. Their bodies will be raised and they’ll be judged for their sins which results in eternal separation from God.

How’s your hearing?

What does it mean to “hear” the voice of Jesus? Is it possible since He is not here now? Yes, it is. His word is living and active. The Spirit is alive and working. He is speaking to people’s spirits through both of these means. The real issue is: it’s not just listening, but hearing and obeying. Do we put our full trust in and obey Him?

Life in self

Think about your life. Do you control your existence – when you were born and when you die? Only God has life in Himself. He is eternally existent. Jesus claims the Father gave him this quality so Jesus is also God. Note: He was not created by the Father.

<- Reflection ->
  • Do you hear the voice of Jesus calling you to repentance – even right now? Do you need to be raised from the dead? Believe in Him. Leave a comment if you do.
