Covenant makers | Nehemiah 9:38-10:29

Covenant Makers

The past few days, we studied the prayer of the people offered in response to the reading and studying of the Word as a congregation. It is a humble prayer of contrition, a model in many ways for us. Now they put some “meat hooks” into it to make it more binding; the leaders all signed it as an official document and stamped a seal on it. Nehemiah 10:2-27 is a full list of all the leaders, Levites and priests who signed the document and sealed it.

Holy

In verse 28, the people confirmed they had “separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God”. This is holiness – separating ourselves from something. But notice also that it is not just separated from, but separated to something. Israel was separated from all other nations and people and holy to the Lord, they were  dedicated to the Lord. The high priest wears a turban and on the turban is a metal plate with the inscription, “Holy to the Lord”. Likewise, we are to be holy to the Lord, separated unto Him. More on holiness.

Revival for a Reason

David Guzik at enduringword.com elaborates on the aspect of this prayer being an indication of revival. This, being the final sign of revival, he suggests, “The fourth sure sign of revival – after brokenness of heart, after reflection on God’s goodness, after recognition of our sinfulness, is a renewal of our obedience. We come to a place of decision, so this work of God is not just a wonderful experience, but something that shapes our future.”

PS

It probably goes without stating that I am assuming you are reading these passages and not just my meger notes. Everything you really need to know is there. I just add my thoughts in an attempt to stimulate yours to think more deeply about His Word and Him.
