Two comings, two verses | Zechariah 9:9-10 (AMP)

9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!

Shout aloud, O Daughter of Jerusalem!

Behold, your King (Messianic King) is coming to you;

He is righteous and endowed with salvation,

Humble and unassuming [in submission to the will of the Father] and riding on a donkey,

Upon a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will cut off the [war] chariot from Ephraim

And the [war] horse from Jerusalem,

And the bow of war will be cut off.

And He will speak [words of] peace to the nations,

And His dominion shall be from sea to sea [absolutely endless],

And from the River [Euphrates] to the ends of the earth.

Zechariah 9:9-10 (AMP)

First coming

These two verses cover two comings of Christ. Verse 9 prophesies the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem preceding his crucifixion. (Matthew 21:5) It’s a call to all Jews to recognize and celebrate their coming King, their Messiah. Jews who knew this passage recognized Jesus was fulfilling this prophecy and welcomed Him to Jerusalem.

This was to be a time of great celebration and rejoicing – similar to when an earthly king returned home with the spoils of war and victory. Yet, it is different in that the Messiah is righteous. He is right. In His nature He is righteous. He is pure and undefiled.

Different also in that He brings salvation. The JFB commentary says it this way: “The Hebrew is reflexive in sense, “showing Himself a Saviour; . . . having salvation in Himself” for us. Endowed with a salvation which He bestows as a king.”

Note: Riding on a donkey was not what makes Him humble. He is humble by nature. It was actually common for Kings to ride donkeys. The fact that He rides a donkey rather than a horse means He comes for peace, not war.

Second coming

Verse 10 is a prophecy about Christ’s second coming, the Millennial Kingdom. Regarding “I will cut off”,  Wesley’s commentary  says, “When the Messiah comes and sets up his kingdom, he will need no external force. Neither chariot, bow nor sword, brought salvation to him, neither shall they be mentioned in the day of his conquest.”

This coming will be magnificent and the results on the earth will be visible. It will be evidenced by peace. It will be world-wide.

Let us be awed at God’s omniscience that He knows the beginning from the end. Prophecy is no problem for Him, He just tells us what He already knows. No guessing or hoping; no doubting.

Jesus, our Messiah, has come and will come again – with power and glory. He brought salvation at His first advent. He will bring peace and world dominance at His second.
