Rejoice in small things | Zech. 4:8-10 (NLT)

8 Then another message came to me from the Lord: 9 “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. 10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.)

Zechariah 4:8-10 (NLT)

Encouragement continues

The encouragement continues in these verses. God knows the situation completely. The Jews have returned from Babylon. They don’t have a temple; not even a wall around the city. They made a start on the temple but then stopped due to opposition.

Encouragement is something they desire and that’s what God gives them. Despite their sin, because of His promise and who He is, He heaps it on them.

Zerubbabel started it, he will complete it. As we read yesterday, not by his own might alone but by God’s Spirit.

God rejoices in the small things

I chose the NLT for the wording of v10. Yes, it’s an interpretation and changes the tense, but it makes sense. God is watching the work. Most commentators refer back to the 7 eyes on the rock (and the 7 tubes on the lamp) as showing that God is watching. He sees their start and rejoices. He knows they stopped and had gotten distracted building their own houses, yet He forgives and encourages them!

God’s work

Enduring Word adds this thought to the message in these verses: “Though the work was empowered by the Spirit of God, Zerubbabel still needed his plumb line. He still needed to get to work. God could have given Zerubbabel a shortcut and instantly, miraculously finished the work. That isn’t God’s way of doing things, because His work in the life of Zerubbabel was as important to Him as His work through Zerubbabel.” (Enduring Word.com)

Our Encouragement

This quote from Charles Spurgeon provides us a nice summary: “God accepts your little works if they are done in faith in his dear Son. God will give success to your little works: God will educate you by your little works to do greater works; and your little works may call out others who shall do greater works by far than ever you shall be able to accomplish.”
