Access to Heaven | Zechariah 3:6-7 (ESV)

6 And the angel of the LORD solemnly assured Joshua, 7 “Thus says the LORD of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here.

Solemn promise

The angel of the Lord makes a solemn promise to Joshua in this vision of Zechariah. It’s not a condition of salvation but ability to do good works of service to the Lord and, access to Heaven.

A similar admonition was given to another Joshua back when Israel was first entering the promised land (Joshua 1:7). See the parallel based on the Jews entering the land?

Conditions

Two conditions: 1) Walk in the ways of the Lord – do His will and, 2) Keep His charge, i.e., perform His service, the service of a priest. Just two things. Easy, right? Surely you jest.

Do you struggle like me to do His will? Sometimes it’s plain in His Word. Other times it comes through the Spirit, the still small voice. This voice doesn’t condemn. It instructs us in the way we should go.

Rewards

There are three rewards for following the conditions:

  • rule my house – he would lead in the temple and, by extension, lead the people. Jesus also rules His Father’s house
  • have charge of my courts – courts are where the people would assemble for worship – inner for men, outer for women, and one for gentiles
  • the right of access – see this from Enduring Word:

“God promised Joshua privileged access into the presence of God. This wasn’t a surprising promise for a High Priest, but we have the same promise: Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)” (Enduring Word)
