Apple of His eye | Zechariah 2:8-9 (NLT)

8 After a period of glory, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me against the nations who plundered you. For he said, “Anyone who harms you harms my most precious possession. 9 I will raise my fist to crush them, and their own slaves will plunder them.” Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me.

Zechariah 2:8-9 (NLT)

Punishment for enemies

Zechariah now turns his attention to the nations that treated Israel too harshly and cruelly. God speaks in righteous anger and proclaims He will punish these nations. We know from history that He already meted out his punishment.

You mess with him, you mess with me

He tells them that when they caused trouble for Israel, they caused trouble for God. It’s like the expression, “You mess with my friend, you mess with me.” Anyone who “messes with” Israel, God’s chosen, will have God to deal with. He will protect and take revenge.

Apple of the eye

What NLT translates as “most precious possession” is translated by NASB and ESV (more literal versions) as “the apple of his eye”. You’ve undoubtedly heard this expression before.
Sight is very important to us. When an object approaches our eyes, we reflexively respond by closing our eyelids and lifting our hands to block the object and protect them. Our eyes are very valuable to us yet also very vulnerable.
God uses this word-picture to show us how valuable Israel is to Him. Here are two other verses:

  • “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings” (Psalm 17:8).
  • Deuteronomy 32:10 God’s care for Israel: “In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye.”

Apple of His eye

“God held the Israelites as the apple of His eye, rebellious and stiff-necked though they were in the wilderness. Being the apple of His eye, they were most cherished. And God’s care for His people has not diminished with time.” (More on this topic at Gotquestions.org

Likewise, He cares for us. Have you ever stopped for a moment to think about that? He has chosen you. Even though we sin and rebel, He still loves and chooses us! Can you give Him thanks?
