Down to business | Ezra 8:35-36 (AMP)

35 Also the [former] exiles who had come from the captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and 12 male goats for a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to the Lord. 36 And they delivered the king’s edicts to the king’s satraps (lieutenants) and to the governors west of the [Euphrates] River, and they supported the people and God’s house.

Ezra 8:35-36 (AMP)

The main event

The details of their arrival in Jerusalem continue. Yesterday we read that they arrived, rested for 3 days, then delivered the treasure to the temple. Now they devote themselves to the main task – worship, through sacrifice. [We addressed this abundant sacrifice here.]

These folks were captives in Babylon and had been freed. They were protected mercifully by the hand of God during their 4-month trip and arrived safely so they celebrated with worship through sacrifice.

Their other business

Ezra also delivered the edict of the king – probably the king’s letter which authorized Ezra’s position and role. This may have been a bit difficult for humble Ezra; he doesn’t seem to be the kind of person to boast and seek power.

Down to business

What I like most is the last sentence, “they supported the people and God’s house”. This is what they ultimately came to do. It seems the worship in the temple and spiritual life among the first returnees had waned. Ezra and his team of priests and Levites was like the arriving of the cavalry to get things back on track with worship in Jerusalem.

Is your personal worship “out of kilter”? Are you “stuck in a rut” doing the same things without much purpose, feeling for effect? Do a quick checkup. It could be a signal that you’re slacking in your spiritual life. Maybe you’re drifting into worship of idols or not trusting God. Be careful. Protect your faith.

Maybe your brother or sister needs some help. Pray first but do take action. Ask them some questions. “Think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” (Hebrews 10:24 NLT)
