Follow the Leader | Hebrews 13:7 NLT

Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.

Hebrews 13:7 NLT

Leaders in your life

Who are the leaders in your life? Narrow it down to those who’ve taught you the Word of God*. Likely it’s your pastor (or pastors). In this day and age of podcasts and online preaching (and BLOGs), it could be from them. If you’re a bit older, it could be radio teachers (like Donald Cole who used to be on Moody Radio), or someone like Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel who sent out cassette tapes of sermons. Maybe it’s a singer/songwriter like the legendary Keith Green who “preached” and taught the Word through music and sharing at his concerts. For many who were blessed with a godly family, it was/is dad and/or mom.

What good?

This question narrows the field a bit more since for only a few of these leaders you personally know the “good that has come from their lives”. For those leaders you know, what good has come from their teaching? How has it benefited you and others?

Your response

Now, have you thanked them for it? Do you pray for them (if still living, of course)? If they have an online ministry, have you supported them financially? Are you following their example of faith?

Requirement for leadership

If you happen to be a leader, then I suggest you consider your legacy. I like what Enduring Word says on this verse: “Leaders don’t need to be perfect, but they should be able to show with their life that the power of Jesus is real as it impacts and transforms the individual life. That demonstrates a faith that can actually be followed.”

**Why different versions?

Some may wonder why I use different versions when I post (NASB, ESV, NLT, AMP). I read the text a number of times, think and pray for understanding, then look at different versions to see which seems to be most faithful. I usually defer to the most literal but if it’s not clear I go with another. I’m thankful we have so many versions. Consider those who don’t have any version!

* Older commentaries extend this field to the saints of Chapter 11, but I agree with contemporary commentators who believe it is referring to leaders we know.
