By faith…God’s rule overrules | Hebrews 11:23 (NLT)

23 It was by faith that Moses’ parents hid him for three months when he was born. They saw that God had given them a [beautiful] child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king’s command.

Some background

Exodus 2:1-10 gives us the background on this incident. The Israelites had been in Egypt for 430 years after Joseph died. The Egyptians eventually made them slaves. God blessed them and they became numerous so the Pharaoh tried population control through the killing of all male babies.

A Mother’s love

Moses should have been thrown into the Nile river to die. Beyond natural love, it seems that his parents (his mom in particular) had some intuition or even foreknowledge from God about him and sought to save him. He was a beautiful child and this may have corroborated her thinking and bolstered her hope. They hid him for three months. When she couldn’t any longer, she fashioned a basket boat and put Moses in the Nile river.

God’s intervention

It’s likely that many other Hebrew mom’s tried to save their sons. But God intervened here. He protected the family those first three months. Then He orchestrated that when Moses was put in this makeshift boat, the Pharaoh’s daughter happened to come to the Nile to bathe. She took pity on beautiful baby Moses when she found him and decided to adopt him. Moses’ sister had been waiting to see what would happen and helped arrange to have Moses cared for by his mother. This all was too amazing to be a coincidence.

Mom’s faith

Moses’ mom (and dad) were willing to risk punishment for disobeying the King’s law. The were obeying a higher law. God’s rule, His law, overrules the laws of men. God gives us governmental authority to obey, but when the laws contradict God’s (like don’t murder), we must obey God rather than man. Acts 5:29-32 provides a NT example of this where the apostles righteously refused the Jewish leaders’ command to stop preaching. This kind of faith requires courage – courage to do God’s will over man’s will – including our own.
