By faith… pass the test | Hebrews 11:17-19 (NLT)

17 It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, 18 even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” 19 Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.

Today we’re given another reason to honor Abraham as a man of faith. This test was unlike his previous test to leave his home and go to a place he’d never been. He obeyed.

We just saw how God promised to make a great nation out of him. He would do it through a son that was not born yet, not even conceived yet. More amazing was that both he and Sarah were well beyond child bearing age. They believed and God fulfilled His promise.

By this time, Sarah had died and most commentaries suggest Isaac was between a teenager and 35. Reading the account in Genesis 22, we see that Isaac carried the wood for the sacrifice. “If he was strong enough to carry the wood up the mountain, then he was probably strong enough to resist being sacrificed and fend off Abraham if he had wanted to.” (Gotquestions.org)

There is so much to learn from this account! We’ll focus on the test that proved amazing faith. You may also be wondering why God would do this. “God. This is the miracle son of Your promise. Sarah is dead so he’s the only way. I don’t understand.” If it were me, I would have added, “This is crazy!”

The text here tells us of his amazing faith. He didn’t waver or ask questions. Abraham obeyed. He reasoned that if he went through with it, God would raise Isaac from the dead. In his mind he already did it. It’s clearly foreshadowing his future descendent through whom the world would be blessed (Gen 12:1-4) – Jesus. Pause with me and honor Abraham’s faith. Abraham wasn’t the only one with faith. We should also note that Isaac could likely have resisted Isaac at his age. The fact that he didn’t shows us his faith and trust in his father.
